Cookie guidelines

1. What exactly are cookies?
A cookie is a text file for storing information for a specific period of time. Most websites use such cookies. They are downloaded and saved automatically by your browser when you first visit a website. Such a cookie has at least two components: the name and the value of the file. There is normally also a self-delete date which can determine the lifetime of the cookie. There is a distinction between session cookies and persistent cookies. Session cookies are automatically deleted when you close your browser. Persistent cookies remain stored on your computer depending on what length of time has been set for the cookie. They are only deleted after a certain period of time has elapsed. These cookies remember your preferred settings when you visit the website again.

2. Are cookies evil?
This question cannot be answered in a general sense. It depends what data the cookies of a website save or not. And for what this information is ultimately used. You can imagine cookies to be like tools, such as a hammer or saw. They have basically been designed to be useful, though can also be used to negative ends. Therefore, distinctions should be drawn and a decision needs to be made as to which cookies you personally require and which do not have to be saved. You should adjust the cookie settings on your end device accordingly.

3. What are cookies required for anyway?
Cookies have been designed to make visits to a website easier and more user friendly. When online shopping, for example, they allow the website to 'remember' which products you have put in your shopping basket when you visit a site again, or display your preferred layout and font size automatically. However, not all cookies are useful and solely for the benefit of the user. Tracking cookies, for example, are used to monitor your behaviour on websites and to place adverts accordingly or to make websites more user-friendly. You should therefore consider which cookies you allow and which should be rejected. In order to make this decision, it is helpful to know what types of cookie there are.

4. What types of cookie are there?
Functional cookies are absolutely essential to ensure the main functionality of the website. Without them websites cannot be used as intended. They ensure, amongst other things, functionality when going from a http page to a https page and therefore ensure the maintenance of increased security standards. These cookies collect anonymised information (you cannot therefore be personally identified) and cannot track your movements on other websites. They are only saved for the duration of the session and therefore are a type of session cookie. You do not have to consent to the use of these cookies.

First-party cookies are - in accordance with the legal definition - cookies which are not absolutely essential to the use of a website. However, they fulfil important tasks which make surfing more comfortable. Using these cookies, for example, settings such as language are saved. The information they contain only serves the website accessed.

Performance cookies are those which collect information on how a website is used by the visitor. This includes which pages a user calls up most and whether error messages are displayed. These cookies do not save any further information. They are only used to increase user friendliness and to adapt websites to users in a more targeted fashion. This data is also saved in anonymised form.

If third-party content is integrated into a website, then it can set third-party cookies whilst you are not directly on its website. These cookies are known as third-party cookies. Using these the third party can save data about you as a user and identify you when you visit their own website and therefore present you with a website adapted to you. This is possible, for example, when embedding YouTube videos in a website.

If cookies are set for marketing purposes, they are called marketing cookies. These are used to show the user advertising which is tailored and relevant to then. It is also used to set the recurrence of an advert and to determine the effectiveness of an advertising campaign.

5. Where can I choose my cookie settings?
Most websites provide a note on the use of cookies. You can adapt cookie permissions more precisely to your personal preferences under your browser settings. Most browsers allow you to accept or delete all cookies, or only to permit certain cookies. You can prevent cookies from being saved on your devices by selecting "Do not accept cookies". However, if you reject the saving of all cookies, then the website might not function properly. You can delete cookies saved on your device at any time. See the instructions for your browser or device for details about how this works.
